Working together in the Northern Basin

Unlike other parts of the Murray–Darling, the Northern Basin is largely unregulated, with rivers that shift between flood and dry. In a system this variable, decisions in one place often have ripple effects elsewhere. Finding ways forward depends on trust as much as technical knowledge.

Watertrust is working in the region to help create the conditions for that trust. Our role is to provide spaces where people can come together, share what matters to them, and explore solutions that work locally.

Over recent months, Watertrust Principal Mike Peat has returned several times to the Northern Basin. By meeting with First Nations representatives, graziers, irrigators and councils, he is following through on earlier conversations and showing Watertrust’s commitment to keep coming back.

“There’s already a lot happening across the Basin,” Mike says. “The challenge is bringing it together so the effort adds up to more than the sum of its parts. That’s why it’s important to keep returning and helping people connect across different conversations.”

The next step will involve a small working group in the Lower Balonne. This will bring together people who have been part of recent discussions to confirm shared priorities and build on work already underway. It is one way of supporting dialogue and helping local voices prepare for the decisions and reforms ahead.

This work is still at an early stage, but each step is helping to strengthen relationships and connect efforts across the Basin.
