Momentum continues to build around water planning in the Northern Territory, and Watertrust’s Kate Peake is continuing to support stakeholders and government in shaping Territory-specific solutions grounded in trust and collaboration.

Following the Western Davenport Lessons Learned report, Kate has seen positive early signs: “Recent responses from the NT Government signal they’re genuinely engaged and open to continuing the conversation,” she says. “That’s a strong foundation to build on.”

Reform is challenging; rather than pushing for fast reform, Kate describes Watertrust’s approach as one of patient partnership. “Our role is to support governments and stakeholders in exploring options together – especially in the Territory where landscapes, water systems, and policy settings are different to other parts of the country.”

The Territory’s unique water landscape, with high variability, deep cultural connections, and limited large-scale infrastructure, means traditional policy models don’t always translate. Recent work by Watertrust has been exploring how water can be managed in ways that reflect these differences.

These efforts are now evolving into broader conversations about what good water governance looks like in the Territory.

“There’s a growing and genuine interest in getting this right,” Kate says. “We’re aiming to create a safe space where those conversations can happen, and where progress can continue – one step at a time.”
