“Does fairness really matter?” Watertrust Australia’s CEO, Karen Hutchinson asks in the Leith Boully AM Oration.
The Leith Boully AM Oration held in Brisbane on March 10 honoured the work of the late much loved and respected Leith Boully AM. In addition to Karen’s oration, the theme of fairness was a provocation for other speakers on the day:
Professor Rob Vertessy spoke about the role of science in informing better decisions. Watertrust Chair Kathryn Fagg AC, FTSE, FAICD discussed how philanthropy can play a role in better policy making and problem solving, and the Hon. Karlene Maywald explored how changes in expectations around community empowerment requires enablers such as models of governance and resourcing.
Karen’s exploration of fairness raises a question that underlies many of the hardest water debates. The more Watertrust explores this question through its work, the clearer it becomes that fairness is fundamental for people’s trust in process.
